Firefighters from both Bridport and Beaminster Fire Station tackled a grass fire earlier today.

They were called to the blaze at 13.24pm after a fire had broken out on a grass verge and spread into hedgerow.

The incident, in Beaminster believed to have been caused after the grass cutting machine had hit a stone and sparked the fire.

One pump and a water carrier was mobilised from Bridport Fire Station who, alongside their colleagues from Beaminster Fire Station, managed to stop the fire spreading to the field.

In an act of quick thinking, the farmer ran his grass cutter along the edge of the field in order to cut off the fire's path.

Crews assisted in damping down hot spots.

A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said: "It goes to show how dry and easy it is for these fires to start at the moment.

"Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue is incredibly busy at the moment so please help us by being mindful of discarding cigarettes, refrain from bonfires or controlled burns, only have bbqs in designated areas or even better - have a picnic instead."
